No one wants to consider anything going wrong with their dog’s health. Your pup looks to you with adoration and has seemingly endless energy; the thought of something terrible lurking under the surface can seem unimaginable. While regular vet checkups, exercise, and a healthy diet can go a long way toward ensuring your dog enjoys a long life, it’s also important to watch for common issues that may affect your dog’s breed. Here are some of the most common reasons these popular breeds need to be seen at an animal hospital in Chicago.
Labrador Retriever
America’s favorite breed is known for its energy, affection, intelligence, and loyalty. While this happy-go-lucky breed doesn’t have many frequent health issues, Labrador Retrievers are prone to ACL tears. This torn ligament injury often needs surgical repair. Labs are also prone to elbow and hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy that can lead to blindness. The most serious condition to watch for is hemangiosarcoma, which is considered the most fatal form of canine cancer. Unfortunately, this cancer rarely displays symptoms until the dog suddenly collapses.
Golden Retriever
The Golden Retriever is the classic family pet: they’re great with kids and strangers, playful, and obedient. The most common issue that affects Golden Retrievers is cancer. This breed is prone to several types of cancer including hemangiosarcoma and lymphoma. The good news is lymphoma often responds well to chemotherapy.
German Shepherd
German Shepherds are incredibly loyal and intelligent. It’s no wonder they are often trained for important work like bomb sniffing. Unfortunately, German Shepherds are at risk for several genetic conditions like degenerative myelopathy, a neurological condition that may start in middle-aged dogs.
Poodle
Health problems common among poodles will depend on the variety. For all types of poodles, including standard, miniature, and toy, hip dysplasia is a serious concern. This happens when the dog’s hip joint deteriorates or weakens and it’s believed to be genetic. Symptoms can begin as young as 5 months old. Some types of poodles are also prone to epilepsy which causes seizures.
Bulldogs
Bulldogs have a distinctive flat face and short snout. Like pugs and Boxers, they are prone to a condition known as brachiocephalic syndrome due to the thicker, narrower nasal passages. Because this breed can have trouble breathing (that’s why he snores!), it can be treated at an animal hospital in Chicago. Potential treatment options include steroids for inflammation and surgery to open the nasal passages.
