Transmen are individuals who were assigned female at birth but who identify with a male gender identity. Since gender is a spectrum, some transmen choose to socially transition while others choose either a partial or full medical transition. This may include one or all of the following: testosterone therapy, top surgery (mastectomy), bottom surgery, body masculinization surgery and facial masculinization surgery.

These surgeries can have a profound improvement in the self-esteem, confidence and quality of life of a transman because their body is more aligned with how they identify.

Testosterone therapy or HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) is one of the first protocols after therapy for the transman undergoing a medical transition. Testosterone helps the transman achieve a masculine looking physique by increasing muscle mass and reducing body fat as well as body fat redistribution.

Top surgery (also known as a mastectomy) is one of the most commonly performed surgeries for a transman. During this procedure, the breast tissue is removed to achieve a very masculine looking chest. This is a very routine and safe surgery with dramatic results.

A relatively new surgery is facial masculinization surgery (FMS). This is actually comprised of several facial surgeries that include rhinoplasty, forehead lengthening, adams apple augmentation, cheek augmentation, and chin/jaw augmentation. Combined, these surgeries can achieve a chiseled, masculine looking face.

Body masculinization surgery (BMS) is targeted liposuction to achieve a chiseled and tight abdomen and mid-section as well as removing excess fat around the thighs and buttocks.

Some transmen choose to have bottom surgery, also known as genital confirmation surgery (GCS). This includes a hysterectomy to remove the inner female sex organs as well as creating a penis and testes. This is considered a major and invasive surgery with considerable downtime.
