Getting an MRI imaging exam for the first time doesn’t need to incite fear and panic. Read through the list for a bit of background before you undergo the procedure. That should take away some of the anxiety you feel.
It’s loud
Doctors won’t tell you, but the MRI machine is often loud. You may want to bring a pair of foam or silicone earplugs to help you block out the noise. Some facilities may provide ear protection as well if you don’t happen to bring any along with you.
It can take a bit longer
Sometimes, the procedure can be as short as 15 minutes. However, in some cases, that 15-minute exam may turn into an hour, Everyday Health says. Don’t let yourself go hungry to the procedure. If you can eat, grab a bit of snack before you go in. That should tide you over until the test is done.
You may get anxious
If you suffer from claustrophobia, then you may feel a bit anxious inside the MRI machine. No worries, though. You can check out MRI imaging facilities that have MRI machines with an open design. That way, you won’t need to be put under a mild sedative just to lower your anxiety levels during a procedure.
You need to get rid of the bling
Don’t go into the MRI machine with any bit of jewelry. Take them all off, including any belly-button rings you have. Think of the machine as a very large magnet. You wouldn’t want anything you’re wearing to be pulled out by the magnet. You may come away from the experience scot free but you could end up destroying the machine and compromising the treatment schedule of the other patients for the next few days. Keep that from happening by ditching all your jewelry before you go in for your imaging exam.
