Being a flight nurse is a challenging and exciting career that takes a lot of courage and dedication. Do you have what it takes? Here are the steps to becoming a professional:

Get Experience by Working in a Busy ICU

Most of the companies you come across will want their applicant to have at least 3 or 5 years of experience in working in a busy ICU or ER. The better of the two would be the ER since you see a more diverse group of patients. It also helps you learn to multitask in an environment that is constantly changing due to its fast pace.

Try to Get Advanced Certification

Along with recent experience, most companies will want you to have some type of advanced certification like CEN, CCRN, and CFRN. They will most likely want you to have one of these by the time you get your first job as a flight nurse. Even if you don’t get them before, having them ahead of time will make you more appealing to employers.

Market Yourself and Network with Other Professionals

This is a pretty small field of work. Try your best to get in touch with other HEMS professionals so you can really get your name out there. This will help you look better to employers, and before you know it, you’ll land your dream job in HEMS.

Always remember that this outline of steps can be broken down into a million more steps. Even following the guide to the exact point will be challenging at times. Just remember to keep the end goal in mind and remember that success is the ultimate reward.
